В Великобритании рынок краткосрочных займов, на котором денежные брокеры (топеу brokers) организуют займы между банками, правительством, дисконтными домами (discount houses) и акцептными домами (accepting houses) и где Банк Англии выступает как кредитор последней инстанции (lender of last resort). На данном рынке обращаются в первую очередь переводные векселя (bills of exchange), казначейские векселя и торговые тратты. Рынок находится на Ломбард-стрит и вокруг нее, в Лондонском Сити. Частные инвесторы через свои банки могут разместить на денежном рынке депозиты, обычно на сумму более 10 000 ф. ст., по процентной ставке более высокой, чем банковская.

В самом широком смысле, применяемом в экономической теории и экономической политике, это часть рынка вообще, в которой взаимодействуют предложение денег и спрос на деньги. В более узком смысле этим термином определяют оптовый рынок краткосрочных ценных бумаг (со сроком погашения до одного года), таких как депозитные сертификаты, казначейские векселя и коммерческие бумаги. Эта часть рынка ссудных капиталов обслуживает, таким образом, в основном движение оборотного капитала компаний и предприятий, краткосрочных ресурсов банков, учреждений, государства и частных лиц. При этом за рынком долгосрочных кредитов (а также акций, других ценных бумаг и финансовых инструментов, включая производные финансовые инструменты) закрепляется термин финансовый рынок. This market is often used by businesses when they need short-term funds to bridge the gap between paying operating costs and collecting revenue from product sales.
